Matt was raised in the tradition of People’s Lawyers who use the law to establish rules of the road that protect ordinary people against the abuses of the powerful. His father Dean Robb was a founding member of the first interracial law firm in American History, Detroit’s own Goodman, Crockett, Eden & Robb. The firm was renowned in Michigan and around the United States for successfully talking on the groundbreaking causes of civil rights, workers’ rights, personal injury, and corporate responsibility. Matt authored a book about his father’s remarkable life entitled Dean Robb: An Unlikely Radical, which won the 2011 Indie Excellence Award for Best Historical Biography.

Matt became a lawyer to help carry on Dean’s legacy of helping people take on large, powerful interests and advance causes of justice. After beginning his career as an educator in Detroit Public Schools, he attended Wayne State University Law School, where he served as Chair of the Keith Students at the Damon J. Keith Center for Civil Rights.

After graduation, Matt clerked for the legendary Judge Damon J. Keith on the United States Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit. Judge Keith was the longest serving African American federal judge in American History, and he is well known for his groundbreaking opinions that became the law of the land in the areas of presidential power, racial desegregation, and discrimination in the workplace. Matt joined the firm in the summer of 2019 to bring his diverse experience and skillset to the high impact class action context.
