Steve Liddle, founding partner of Liddle Sheets Coulson P.C., has been on the forefront of environmental and class action litigation for more than 20 years. For these efforts, he has been named to Michigan Lawyers Weekly’s “Lawyers of the Year” and Crain’s Detroit Business’s “40 Under 40.”
Early in his career, Steve successfully represented a group of residents whose homes backed up to a canal in Detroit’s lower east side. Sewage had been discharged into the canal for more than 60 years, and previous attempts to fix the problem had gone nowhere. As a result of Steve’s representation, the group obtained a settlement that included $3.8 million dollars and the installation of a $25 million sewage system to stop the discharges. Today, Steve continues his work to fix big problems and obtain compensation for those who have been harmed.
Steve also has been Michigan’s staunchest advocate for the rights of homeowners whose homes have been flooded by sewage. In addition to representing clients in many dozens of class actions, the firm hired lobbyist representation in Lansing to ensure that future flooding victims would not be shut out of court. Steve was the sole homeowner representative in negotiating for the passage of MCL 691.1416 et seq, the law that allows people to sue when their homes flood with sewage.
Steve has served as an adjunct professor at Michigan State University-Detroit College of Law where he taught a class on class actions and complex litigation.
